By John R. Posey, USN Arlington, TX—The Dallas Wings have spent the last two seasons quietly building a powerhouse roster. One of the team’s strengths is the forward position. They are all players who can score, defend, and block shots. Forwards Glory Johnson (8.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Kayla Thornton (8.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg) give the Wings athletic, book end starters who can guard multiple positions. Neither needs the ball to score and can get buckets on follow shots and steals. Johnson has mad hops. She has dunked in pre-game and Wings fans are waiting for that moment when Glory flushes one down on a fast break. Thornton isn’t flashy but she is a great on ball defender and is as athletic as Johnson. They love to double team opponents who dribble into the corner. Rookie Azura’ Stevens (8.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.0 bpg) gives the Wings a versatile 6’6” forward off the bench. Stevens left U Conn a year earlier and has adapted to the pro game. She is long and athletic. Stevens can play the 1,2, or 3 positions and has a decent three point shots. She exploded for 26 points against the Indiana Fever earlier this season. The rookie has a tremendous uoside. These three collectively give the Wings 25.4 points and 14 rebounds a game. Dallas may have the best forward tandem in the league and are why they are 13.9. The only thing missing from this trio is a nickname.
